The Bikes

The bikes used on the expedition were 2006 Model BMW GS650 Dakar's. These were purchased from Donford BMW Motorrad in Stellenbosch, near Cape Town. Additional features included centre stands, tank bags and sheepskin saddle covers.

All are identical bikes, with the possible exception of John's, who gave his bike the Touratech "Pimp-my-ride" treatment (GPS, Tank bag, raised handlebars, ruggedized foot pegs, uprated foot stand, lowered suspension).

All have a single cylinder, twin spark Rotax engine (which never missed a beat), however, we experienced several issues with suspension elements (failed rear shocks, and badly leaking front forks).

Mikes bike is now back in South Africa, while those of HS, John, Glenn, Nick & Ross are in deepest Devon being repaired with tractor parts!

They have a long and distinguished history, as this video reveals.
