Canyon Lodge to Maltahoehe (slight detour!)

Day 3 - 24th January 2007

Woke early to meet for an excellent breakfast at 7.00am. On the road for 8.10am to make the short, but difficult ride to Fish River Canyon viewing point. On the way managed to view Ostrich and Antelope. Weather was staring to look iffy as we approached Helmeringhausen for lunch, timing it about 15 minutes too late. A thunderstorm started, dropping bolts of lightening either side of the road, and rather large quantities of water. BMW Airflow riding gear was found to have the waterproofing qualities of a mosquito net. It was decided that the intended destination (Sossusvlei Lodge) was unattainable. And instead we decided to head for Maltahoehe and try to find a hotel. We then proceeded to ride through very challenging, wet, slippery mud (as they were now) roads. To everyone’s credit , we all managed to stay upright (though it got very close a few times). We drew into to Maltahoehe in the dry (just), tired and very relieved. We checked into the Maltahoehe Hotel and after quick showers etc, all retired to the bar. A mixture of a sense of relief and achievement, we all got in touch with our inner beer-monster. Total lack of air conditioning and a serious mozzie problem resulted in a very hot and uncomfortable night for those that managed to retire sober.

440 kms.
