Sossusvlei to Swakopmund

Day 5 & 6, 26th - 27th January 2007

Departed at 8.10am for our intended destination of Swakopmund. Did the obligatory stop at Solitaire for fuel & Apple crumble. Rough dirt roads until a few miles short of Walvis Bay, then north up to Swakopmund (stopping to dip our toes into the Atlantic surf). Visited three hotels before deciding on the eventual base. Large courtyard housed many birds (Macaws, parrots etc). Took the mud caked bikes to a local car wash and had them all cleaned from top to bottom. Retired to the local Brauhaus and then on to the “Vineyard” for dinner. Wine-tasting/selection preceeded and excellent meal. Then off for a few beers & pool in an establishment called “Cape to Cairo”. Stayed for the following day.

355 kms

Stayed in Swakopmund. Lateish start and then HS (humble scribe), Glenn & Mike serviced the newer bikes (oil/filter, spanner check). Brauhaus, futile search for reasonable internet bandwidth to upload photos. Nick obtained a new camera when he found his old one didn’t work too well when mixed with dune sand.

Sundowners on the beach, and dinner at the Tugboat (literally, an old tug, the Dany Hugo, on the beach) with well lubricated discussion.

Solitaire Fuel Stop

You can see how it gets the name!

A fuel station in the middle of nowhere run by a New Zealander who makes Apple Crumble all day. That's what Larium can do to a man!

An Apple Crumble stop

Er, which way now boss?

That's an "A" for Atlantic Ocean.

The "I" Indian Ocean (when we get there) has been cut in the interests of good taste.

That's where Anjelina and Brad stayed!!!
